Like all concerned dentists, Dr. Plascyk practices minimally invasive dentistry. In Dr. Plascyk's opinion, the best dentistry is no dentistry at all. Although dentist can now do some amazing things for our patients, there is nothing better than healthy, natural tooth structure.
Minimal drilling starts with a meticulous examination of the teeth and the rest of the masticatory system. Dr. Plascyk uses state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to diagnose disease at the earliest stages. This includes laser cavity detection, digital x-rays and photographs, microscopic bacterial analysis of the plaque. Early diagnosis and treatment has prevented the need for more invasive procedures like root canals, extractions, crowns, bridges and periodontal (gum) surgery in many cases.
An important part of minimally-invasive dentistry is preventing disease. Prevention starts with educating patients about what dental disease is and how to prevent it. Dental disease is caused by two things, infection (bacteria viruses, fungus and parasites) and stress. To minimize infection, we educate patients on on home care procedures. Dr. Plascyk also treats them with an all natural oral antimicrobial therapy. Dr. Plascyk has eliminated the need for many surgical gum procedures with his antimicrobial therapies and education of proper home care for his patients.
In addition to infection control, Dr. Plascyk analyzes the bite for stressful forces on the teeth, muscles and TMJ (jaw joints), then makes recommendations to eliminate the problems.
When treatment is necessary, Dr. Plascyk wants to remove as little natural, healthy tooth structure as possible. The following picture is an example of one of Dr. Plascyk's minimally invasive treatments. The picture shows a newly placed porcelain crown on a tooth. the pink dots show where a traditional crown would end. The green dots show where Dr. Plascyk's crown ends. By keeping the crown margin away from the gum line (when possible), Dr. Plascyk did not have to remove healthy tooth structure, between the two dotted lines.
