Dr. Plascyk's Charlotte, NC area patients had such positive experiences with his implant therapy that many of them referred their family and friends to him for their implant treatment.
Dr. Plascyk has taken numerous courses on dental implant (tooth implant) therapy and has incorporated dental implants into much of his patient care. This dental implant training included a two year hospital residency program at Nassau University Hospital in New York where much of the training involved dental implants and cosmetic dentistry. In addition, Dr. Plascyk completed a two-year post-doctoral certification in dental implants at New York University School of Dental Medicine. This training and experience has made Dr. Plascyk a well qualified dentist when performimg implant therapy. This has greatly benefited his Charlotte, N.C. area patients.
Implant procedures in my Charlotte, NC office elicit minimal discomfort from start to finish. Personally, I cannot say enough positive things about dental implants (tooth implants). Dental implants have now been a regular part of dental therapy for over 25 years. Dental implants (tooth implants) are so routine and predictable as a functional and cosmetic tooth replacement that it is almost always the first treatment of choice for replacing a missing tooth. I would personally have a dental implant placed in my mouth without hesitation if I needed a replacement for a missing tooth.
Microscopically, bone cells recognize a dental implant as part of the body and lay down bone directly on the dental implant (tooth implant). This would not happen if there were any compatibility problems with a dental implant (tooth implant). In addition, tens of thousands of patients have had their blood serum tested against dental implant materials for years. This testing has shown dental implants (tooth implants) to be one of the most biocompatible materials available. It is no wonder that the same material that is used for dental implants (tooth implants) is used in many other medical fields as well.
There are two types of materials used for dental implants: titanium and more recently Zirconiumoxide. The most common, time tested and researched implants are titanium.The key to titanium implant compatibility is the oxide layer on the outside of the material which isolates the titanium metal from the body and allows bone cells to fuse to the implant. Although many companies make dental implants, they all are very similar. They are conical in shape, have threads and they are all made out of commercially pure titanium. Historically the first implants were titanium. Then they changed the materials and they sprayed all sorts of surface coatings on them to make them work better. However, nothing worked as good as the original recipe so the manufacturers went back to commercially pure titanium again.
Titanium is a very reactive metal but not when it has an oxide layer covering its outer surface. Titanium only exists with this oxide layer when exposed to air. This oxide layer is what makes titanium such a biocompatible material. The bone and body tissues do not recognize it as a foreign body and bond directly to it. The titanium oxide layer is also anti-inflammatory. Titanium does not corrode in contact with body fluids. Galvanic corrosion can occur if a crown made of dissimilar metal is cemented on a titanium implant. The crowns that we use in our practice are all nonmetal crowns so corrosion cannot occur.
Dental Implants are normally a two-step process for my Charlotte, NC area patients. The first step is the surgical phase, which is the placement of the implant. The second step is the restorative step, which is the placement of the crown or bridge on the implant. If there is an adequate amount of bone in the jaw then the surgical phase is fairly easy and straightforward for my Charlotte, NC area patients.
I use a computerized drill to slowly and delicately make an osteotomy, or hole, in the bone that the implant is placed in. It is a comfortable process for my Charlotte, NC area patients before, during and after the procedure is completed. My Charlotte, NC area patients are absolutely surprised by how fast and easy the procedure was. Even after the Novocain wears off, they feel minimal to no discomfort. About 2 months later, I take an impression of the implant and send it to the dental lab. About two weeks later, the crown or bridge is cemented on the implant. No Novocain is needed for the second and third appointments. Dental implants are the least stressful procedure in my office for both me and my patients. Again, my Charlotte, NC area patients are amazed at the ease of the entire dental implant process.
The surgical phase of implant therapy becomes more complicated if there is not enough bone to place the implant. In this case, a bone grafting procedure will need to be completed first to build new bone for the implant. The bone grafting surgery can be relatively simple to very complex. Most procedures are simple to moderate in complexity. Most of my Charlotte, NC area patients have minimal short term discomfort after the bone grafting procedures are performed.

(No one can claim that any dental material is not biocompatible just because it contains certain ingredients (again, just considering general and immunological biocompatibility here). The initial ingredients do not determine the compatibility of a dental material. The corrosive by-products (which are chemically different from the original chemical structure of a material) and the corrosion rate (or half life) are the most important information in determining whether a dental material is compatible or not. If a material remains chemically intact and does not break down on a molecular level to any consequential degree, it cannot harm you. The corrosive by-products (if not compatible) have to be bio-available to the cells in enough quantity to cause a problem for your body.)

Dr. Plascyk is a dentist who performs implant therapy in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Plascyk has completed many implant procedures. Implant procedures sometimes require that bone grafting procedures be completed before an implant is placed. Bone grafting materials are placed in areas of the jaw that will receive a dental implant. Grafts are needed if there is not enough bone for an implant to be placed. All bone graft materials work the same. Once a graft is placed, the body will gradually replace the graft material with new bone. The only graft material that is not naturally replaced is bone taken from the patient. This is called autogenous bone. For example, bone may be taken from one part of the mouth (donor site) and placed into the site that needs it (recipient site). Autogenous bone remains in the body and blood vessels keep it alive. Autogenous bone is the best type of bone grafting material.
There are many sources for non-autogenous bone grafting materials, and they are divided into three categories:
Non-autogenous bone grafts are usually used to avoid doing a second surgery to retrieve from a donor site. All these graft materials are under go high-level testing and sterilization procedures.

As a dentist performimg implant therapy in Charlotte NC, Dr. Plascyk has to perform various bone grafting procedures. Bone grafting procedures can add bone tissue to strengthen a site for future implant placement. The following are some common bone grafting procedures:
Sinus elevation: This is a routine surgical procedure to regenerate bone in the upper posterior jaw. A window is made in the bone, and the floor of the maxillary sinus is elevated. Graft material is placed under the floor, and the site is allowed to heal for future implant placement.

Ridge preservation or socket preservation: This graft procedure is completed when a tooth is removed or extracted. If a graft is not placed, the bone will collapse and resorb (shrink), and there may not be enough bone to insert an implant in the site. By placing a graft and membrane, there usually will be enough bone for the implant after healing. Ridge preservation grafting also helps keep the extraction site free of infection because the graft and membrane can isolate the bone from the bacterial in the mouth during healing.

Ridge expansion: This is a technique of splitting a thin ridge of bone to make it wider so that an implant can be placed between the two sides of bone.

Ridge augmentation: This routine procedure adds bone to a thin ridge. Using various techniques, the graft material is placed on the side of the thin ridge, then secured to promote bone regeneration for future implant placement.

In addition to standard size implants there is another group of implants that are becoming more popular with dentists. These are called narrow body implants or mini-implants. They were developed as a less expensive alternative to standard size dental implants. They were also developed as a way of getting a dental implant into jaw bone that was not wide enough for standard size implants. The drawback is that these narrow body or mini implants cannot handle the biting forces that wider standard diameter implants can. So they have to be used properly to make them work. A mini implant or narrow body implant cannot replace a standard implant in all cases. Also, unlike a standard implant, a mini-implant is more prone (not highly prone) to need replacement. Fortunately they can be easily replaced at minimal cost.
The main use of mini-implants is to help hold removable partial or complete dentures in place. They work very effectively in this manner. But more and more dentists are using mini implants to hold a crown to replace a single tooth. Multiple mini-implants are now even being used to hold non removable bridges.
